Letter of credit The bank offers a letter of credit service, which is widely used to facilitate foreign trade.
A letter of credit is a guarantee for the importer of goods to receive the goods, and for the exporter of goods to receive payment through a bank for shipped goods.
If you are concerned about the payment capacity of your trade partner and guaranteed shipment of the goods purchased, then you should propose that your partner make the payments through a documentary credit.
A letter of credit is set up with the following procedure
- The importer’s bank opens a letter of credit on the basis of the established trade agreement
- The exporter ships the goods upon receiving the notification that the importer has opened a letter of credit
- The exporter compiles as appropriate the documents stipulated in the trade agreement such as payment invoice, certificate of goods and bill of lading, and sends them to the importer’s bank through their own bank.
- The documents are received and verified by the importer’s bank and assuming everything is in order the importer sends the payments, under the terms and conditions of the letter of credit, to the exporter.
